In this part of our “How to buy a used car” series, we will be discussing the oil cap.  The oil cap is the screw top that normally is located on top of the engine.  This is where oil is usually added to the engine.  The oil cap can tell us if there are potential problems or if the car has not been maintained properly.

Be very careful when touching this cap.  It may be hot.  Do not remove it while the engine is running UNLESS you know what you are doing.  You could get seriously hurt.

Remove the cap and look underneath it.  Is it clean?  You want to see some liquid oil underneath the cap, but that is all. You don’t want to see oil sludge build up.  You don’t want to see burnt oil which will look like black oil painted or burned to the surface.  You don’t want to see an oil emulsion which will look like a white paste or glue. 

Next, smell under the cap. You do not want to smell burnt oil.

These are all signs of poor maintenance.  They can also indicate that serious problems may exist including engine damage and costly repairs.  I would recommend moving on to another car or at least have an expert mechanic to check it out.  If it was me, I would move on.

This is just one tip in the “How to buy a used car” series.  Doing your due diligence before buying a used car could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.  The purpose of the “How to buy a used car” series is to give anyone confidence in their search for a used car.

Searching for a used car? Do you already have an idea which car is the one you want? Is it the used car you need? It’s all about comparing your needs with your wants.
